Today we have Coaching Tip #3 from Coach expert Aaron Strong from Steel Springs Performance Coaching! 🌟

What is tempo? How do I measure this effort? By feel or do I need an HR monitor? If using an HR monitor how do I find my tempo?

There are many definitions of tempo and ways to measure it depending on what technology you have available to you. Let’s start with, no technology: I define tempo as a moderate intensity. About 6-7 out of 10, with 10 being full-gas. It should feel sustainable. Breathing should be in control and rhythmic. You shouldn’t feel great strain or any burning in the muscles.

If you have access to a heart rate monitor then tempo can be defined as 85-90% of your functional threshold heart rate (FTHR). To work out FTHR, complete a 20min maximal test. Your average heart rate will be approximately equivalent to FTHR.

If you have access to a power meter, then tempo is defined as 80-90% of FTP. You can find your FTP also by doing a 20min test, taking the average power and subtracting 5%.
